30 January 2026 – South Africa
The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has announced an adjustment to the statutory limit for claims related to loss of income and loss of support. Effective from 31 January 2026, the limit has been increased to R378,581.00. This adjustment is in line with section 17(4A)(a) of the Road Accident Fund Act, No. 56 of 1996, and aims to counter the effects of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
The adjustment was calculated using the CPI index, which was rebased with December 2024 as the base year (100). The CPI index for May 2008 was 43.7, while the index for November 2025 stood at 103.4. The new limit was determined by multiplying the previous limit of R160,000 by the ratio of 103.4/43.7.
This change ensures that the statutory limit remains relevant and fair, reflecting the economic realities and inflationary pressures. The updated limit will apply to claims submitted from 31 January 2026 onwards.
